Workforce and Training

DTEC has a very strong commitment to improving the quality of its staff and labour by continual monitoring and appraisal of individual performances. We are aware of the shortage of skilled personnel in the engineering sector and the problem with the incumbent ageing workforce. By careful and diligent appraisal of our workforce we identify areas where we can improve core skills and abilities and select appropriate training to suit individual needs. We are proud of our record of investment in training and believe we do more in this area than most of our competitors combined.

The following is typical of the training that DTEC provide along with initiatives to recruit new people into the industry.

We hold workshops at the local technical college to introduce our company and its employment opportunities. This initiative has lead to a formal agreement where we take young engineers who have completed NVQ level 2 Engineering courses and introduce them to site work buddied with an experienced person. These young persons are given DTEC specific training in all aspects of their roles. This has proven to be very successful and has enabled us to get the average age of the contract workforce down from high forties to mid thirties over the past three years. This initiative was recognised and rewarded with local and national awards for employee training initiatives.

Our initial health screening for new employees was originally a self certifying questionnaire.  We now have our workforce undertake medical examinations at an independent clinic so we have third party evidence of their fit for work status.

In 2009, DTEC proudly opened its own bespoke training facility complete with mock up trayed column. This enables new starters to be given tray removal training, confined space training, basic rigging and slinging and working at heights training as part of DTEC’s own intensive induction course. Our focus on training and skills enhancement has enabled us to assemble and maintain a competent and loyal workforce who will have undertaken :-

  • Confined space training
  • Working at Heights
  • Rigging and Slinging
  • Spading and De-spading
  • Abrasive wheels
  • Bolting Awareness
  • Making and breaking of flanges
  • Manual Handling

We have had all of the full time personnel undergo Behavioural Safety Leadership training via Apix Consulting.
